In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which reached Bangladesh in March 2020 and rapidly spread nationwide, ARS-Bangladesh took immediate action to support affected communities and promote public health. Bangladesh became the second most affected country in South Asia, following India. Consequently, the government declared a national lockdown from March 23 to May 30, implementing awareness and health measures across the country.
As part of this national effort, ARS-Bangladesh distributed 35,000 masks and 20,000 informational leaflets and posters to increase awareness about Covid-19 prevention among citizens. To further support public health, ARS-Bangladesh registered underprivileged individuals from rural communities for free Covid-19 vaccinations. This program was officially launched by the Executive Vice Chairman of the Microcredit Regulatory Authority of Bangladesh through a virtual meeting.
During the lockdown, ARS-Bangladesh organized a food distribution program for Covid-19 patients and their families in front of the Jessore 250-bed General Hospital. This initiative provided free breakfast and lunch, benefiting around 200 individuals daily. In addition, ARS-Bangladesh distributed essential food items, including rice and pulses, and financial support to 500 low-income families in the Jashore area to help them endure the economic hardships brought by the pandemic.
To address critical healthcare needs, ARS-Bangladesh established an oxygen bank with 16 cylinders, supplied through collaboration with health organizations and donors. This system was designed to ensure rapid access to oxygen for those suffering from severe Covid-19 symptoms. Oxygen cylinders and medicines were also provided free of charge to affected individuals as part of the comprehensive Covid-19 response efforts.
